Our city is located in the Warmia and Masuria Province by the estuary of the Elbląg River to the Vistula Lagoon.  It is one of the biggest cities in northern Poland, the oldest in the Warmia and Masuria Province and one of the oldest in Poland.  It was founded in 1237 and granted city rights in 1246.

Elbląg is an important centre of heavy industry (General Electric, FLSmidth MAAG Gear - Poland), food industry (Elbląg Brewery - part of the Żywiec Group), furniture industry (Meble Wójcik), tourism (Elbląg Canal with its famous canal locks). Two national roads run through the Elbląg ring road: S7 road connecting Elbląg with Gdańsk, Warsaw and Krakow as well as S22 road which is the shortest way connecting West with East of Europe.

Elbląg is also the largest port of the Vistula Lagoon, handling coastal cargo and passenger traffic on the Vistula Lagoon and the Baltic Sea.

Elbląg is located at the crossroads of all types of transport routes.  It is an important international transport hub from east to west, connecting a part of the Russian Federation (Kaliningrad Region) with Poland and western Europe (S22 route connecting Berlin with Kaliningrad and further to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland, belonging to the Trans-European Transport Network).  The S7 expressway, running through and connecting cities such as Gdańsk, Warsaw and Kraków, also intersects here.

Road transport enables easy access to large metropolitan areas located near the cities, such as  Gdańsk, Gdynia, Olsztyn, Bydgoszcz, as well as the picturesque locations in the Warmia, Mazury and Pomerania regions. Railway connections provide transport to Gdańsk, Tczew, Słupsk, Koszalin, Szczecin, Olsztyn, Ełk, Białystok, Warsaw, Malbork, Braniew, Frombork, Berlin and Kaliningrad.  Airline connections are provided via Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdańsk-Rębiechowo, a 40-minute drive from Elbląg, and Olsztyn-Mazury Airport in Szymany, about 160 km from Elbląg.

Due to its location on the Elbląg River, Elbląg's water connections are very convenient and scenic at the same time. Through the Vistula Lagoon, it has access to the Baltic Sea, thus becoming the only sea port in the Warmia and Masuria Province.  The proximity of ports in Gdansk, Gdynia, Kaliningrad and Scandinavia creates opportunities for comprehensive cooperation within the Baltic Sea region.  There are great prospects for the development of Elbląg Sea Port, associated with the construction of the canal through the Vistula Spit and free access to the Baltic Sea.

The city road system incorporates 207 km of roads.  The public transport system consists of two subsystems: a network of 20 bus lines and a network of 5 tram lines.
