Katowice European City of Science 2024

The success of the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE  (SSFK) was great importance in the choice of the capital the Silesian Voivodeship – the EuroScience Association, awarding the title of European City of Science appreciated the exemplary cooperation of the city’s authorities with the universities organizing SSFK, headed by the initiator and leader of the project, the University of Silesia in Katowice.

The success of the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE  (SSFK) was great importance in the choice of the capital the Silesian Voivodeship – the EuroScience Association, awarding the title of European City of Science appreciated the exemplary cooperation of the city’s authorities with the universities organizing SSFK, headed by the initiator and leader of the project, the University of Silesia in Katowice.

Prof. Michaël Matlosz, President of EuroScience, announced the selection of Katowice at a press conference held in The Scientific Information Center and Academic Library on 22nd December  2021.

 The prestigious title of European City of Science has been awarded every two years since 2004. The idea is to deepen the changes accompanying the transformation of the society of these cities and regions towards a science society, to show the richness and diversity of the European scientific landscape and to foster self-education, scientific integration, interest in science among younger generations and the development of European research without frontiers, to strengthen the European and international profile of the scientific community in the city and region, to increase the involvement of citizens and the scientific community in local issues, to trigger public investment in regional science and its infrastructure, and to boost tourism.

European City of Science in 2022 will be the Dutch Leiden. Previously, this title was held by Stockholm, Munich, Barcelona, Turin, Dublin, Copenhagen, Manchester, Toulouse and Trieste. Therefore, it is easy to notice that Katowice is the first city located in Central and Eastern Europe in this group!

Along with the title of European City of Sience comes the right to organize the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) in 2024. This event takes place every two years and is dedicated to scientific research and innovation crucial for the future of the world. ESOF Katowice 2024 will be one of the most prestigious scientific and technological events in the world. Earlier, in 2022, we will organize a conference accompanying EuroScience Open Forum 2022 (ESOF 2022), whose headquarters will be in Leiden.

During the conference a consortium agreement was also signed by the organizers of European City of Science 2024, and its signatories are: the City of Katowice, University of Silesia, Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice and other universities located in Katowice – Silesian Medical University, University of Economics, J. Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education, Academy of Fine Arts and K. Szymanowski Academy of Music.

Organisational support for the initiatives related to the European City Of Science title for Katowice has already been announced by the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship Jakub Chełstowski and the Metropolis President of the Management Board – Kazimierz Karolczak.
