Taking stock of the EU investment in the recovery from the pandemic. Follow the EU Regions Week to know more

After a particularly challenging year for the EU, the 2021 edition of the European Week of Regions and Cities kicks off on Monday, in a fully digital format for the second time.

One year and a half after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, in which Member States have been challenged both from the social and the economic point of view, where European citizens’ health has been put at risk and society has experienced severe consequences due to lockdown measures, it is now time to look ahead and to focus on recovery. That is why this year’s EU Regions Week edition will be taking stock of the EU investment in the recovery from the pandemic.

The #EURegionsWeek will last four days, from 11 October to 14 October. Along with Elisa Ferreira, European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, and Apostolos Tzitzikostas, President of the European Committee of the Regions, 900+ speakers will take part in 300 sessions to debate on topics that are high on the EU political agenda, centred around 4 main themes: Green Transition, Digital Transition, Citizens’ Engagement and Cohesion.

Determined to strengthen the resilience of Member States, the European Commission and the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) launched various initiatives to support European citizens and their local communities. These practical measures and public policies are aimed at investing in a fairer, greener and more digital future. The new Cohesion Policy and new generation of EU programmes for 2021-2027, as well as the EU’s financial instruments for tackling the COVID-19 crisis, will be centre stage in the 2021 edition. The indispensable role of regions and cities in addressing these challenges and looking at the way forward will also be highlighted.

On 11 October, at 11:00, a press conference will be addressing EU investment in recovery, with Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira and President of the European Committee of the Regions Apostolos Tzitzikostas.

As youth occupies a central place in the future of Europe, Elisa Ferreira will debate on-stage at the Citizens’ Dialogue with 8 young Europeans (Youth4Regions Alumni) on 11 October, 19:00, spotlighting examples of EU support across European regions.

On 12 October, CoR President Apostolos Tzitzikostas will give his annual address on the state of the regions and cities of the European Union. He will tackle the most pressing challenges for the year to come and will present the 2021 EU Annual Regional and Local Barometer, with engaging exchanges among local and regional politicians from all over Europe.

Other highlights of the Week will include the Megalizzi-Niedzielski Awards Ceremony, which rewards remarkable young European journalists, as well as workshops on Green Transition, Next Generation EU, and Cohesion Policy support for recovery.
